Big Pit - National Coal Museum
The Big Pit was a working coal mine from 1880 - 1980, but was opened to the public in 1983. Mining is a key part of the UK’s history, and experiencing the conditions those miners and animals worked in is something we should never forget.
I’ve been to Big Pit a couple of times, once when I was 11 and again on my 31st birthday. It’s an amazing experience and tour, especially being taken around the mine by people who worked down them previously. Also, learning about the dangers of working in a coal mine and the changes throughout the years.
It’s one of those places I would recommend visiting to gain a better understanding of our history.
